Dear Parishioners & Friends,
FATHER JOHN REUTHER (1937-2017)
We lost a dear friend, Father John Reuther, on the Feast of All Saints. Father John joined a missionary group of priests after being educated in being a chicken farmer and working in that field (poultry husbandry). Although he never got to spend much time in the foreign missions, his work was stateside in support of their works. Since 1977 he served at the Consolata Mission Houses in Williamsville.
Father John was ordained a priest at his home parish of Saints Peter & Paul in Hamburg in 1973. He helped out in parishes in the Diocese of Buffalo and joined in helping here in Albion around 1992. He was so faithful in weekly visits and filled in for me when I was on vacation.
Even though he had many illnesses, Father John assisted us here at Holy Family until St. Patrick’s Day in 2014 when he got sick while on the altar. That began a road of many severe physical trials over the past 3 1/2 years. His heart finally gave out as we began this Month of All Souls. His Mass of Christian Burial took place on November 6th in the church where he had received the sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, Confirmation and Holy Orders.
Father John was a big man with an even bigger heart. He loved fishing and telling stories. He was revered for the wonderful, meaty homilies he shared and just the warmth and love that flew out from him. One of his heart’s desires was to serve as a parish priest. It was here at Holy Family that many of those wishes were fulfilled.
We are so grateful that our lives were so richly blessed by this wonderful human being and priest, FATHER JOHN REUTHER. May he rest in peace.
